Liebherr 30 LC helps to install the unique telescope at Observatory Skalnaté Pleso.

Liebherr 30 LC tower crane helps with the assembly of the new telescope at The Astronomical Observatory at Skalnaté Pleso (Rocky Lake) in Slovakia. New telescope with a mirror diameter of 1.3 meters, will replace original telescope with a mirror diameter of only 60 cm. Telescope itself is worth more than a 3 million Eur and will be one of the best telescopes in the European network for monitoring near-hazardous asteroids, that could threaten Earth.

Crane was erected on the cruciform base 3,8 x 3,8m with 20m H.H. and 20m jib length. For the crane assembly was in charge MI -8T helicopter, where in total 38 flights was necessary to bring the crane components up to the inaccessible mountain area. In accordance of the maximum helicopter load capacity and further requirements for the telescope installation, Liebherr 30 LC had been provided by company Kranimex Ltd. Transportation and assembly had to be planned in details in conjunction with operating staff of the air transport company, taking into account all safety requirements. Crane is operating via radio remote control unit, which helps with the installation of the telescope within the Observatory.

The Astronomical Observatory is located near the Skalnaté Pleso (‘Rocky Lake’) at the altitude of 1 786m above sea level. It was established in 1943 when the first observations started to be performed.
